About Coimbatore Institute of Technology

Located close to the heart of Coimbatore city, Coimbatore Institute of Technology is an autonomous government-aided institute that was founded by V.Rangaswamy Naidu Educational Trust in the year 1956. It is recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Previously, from 1956 to 1980 it was affiliated to Madras University and in 1980 it for affiliated to Bharathiar University. The institute is currently affiliated to Anna University, Chennai since the year 2001.

The college’s aim was to spread knowledge in the fields of engineering, science, technology and special emphasis on industrial training.

Over the years, Coimbatore Institute of Technology has come to become one of the most prestigious and reputed educational institutions in South India.

The institute founded back in 1956, and the founder principal was Prof. P. R. Ramakrishnan, a philanthropist, industrialist, visionary, and former Member of Parliament. He is also an alumnus of MIT Sloan School of Management and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


At Coimbatore Institute of Technology, there are more than nine undergraduate programmes and over twelve post graduate programs along with a number of P.H.D Research and M.s.c programs.

When it comes to departments, you have a plethora of options to choose from like civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, computer science and engineering, chemical engineering, mathematics, physics, humanities, mechanical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, information technology, computer application, computing, chemistry, COE, etc.


According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Coimbatore Institute of Technology was ranked 62 in 2018.

Extra curricular activities are just as important and Coimbatore Institute of Technology displays this perfectly. There are over twenty clubs which include drama, film, art, karate, music, literature, nature, quiz, photography, space, sports, Kalam Knowledge Club (KKC), RSP, YRC, NSS, NCC, YHAI, women empowerment, rotaract, entrepreneurship, etc.

All branches of applied sciences, technology and engineering have associations which organize events in their respective fields.

Since 2002, the Indian Welding Society (IWS) center is in the institute and is a part of the department of Mechanical engineering.

IEEE finds a part in the institutes department of electrical and electronics engineering.

Sports facilities such as basketball, badminton, cricket, hockey, football, tennis, volleyball, tennikoit and ball badminton.

Other college fests include:

  • Technovation – A national level fest conducted by the chemical, civil and mechanical engineering department every year during the month of September.
  • Cyber Fest – A national level technical symposium held during the month of January which is organized by the department of computer application, MCA and software engineering.
  • Interface – In the month of February every year, an inter-college fest is conducted by CIT circuit branches.

  • R. Prabhu – BE Mechanical (batch of 1968). Former Union Minister of India
    VB Chandrasekhar – BE Mechanical (batch of 1986). Former Indian cricket player
  • Subbiah Arunan – Project Director of Mars Orbiter Mission
  • M. J. Xavier – BTech Chemical (batch of 1967). He is also the founding director of the Indian Institute of Management in Ranchi.
  • Natarajan Chandrasekaran – BSc Applied Sciences (batch of 1976). Current chairman of Tata Sons.
  • Narayanaswamy Balakrishnan – BE ECE (batch of 1972), Indian aerospace and computer scientist and also associate director of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
